Any of our readers in New York who have dealt with an immigration legal issue have probably figured out something significant: these matters can be intricate, time-consuming and flat-out intimidating at times. The sheer amount of paperwork that usually must be filled out for any type of immigration move, along with the details that must be provided, can be discouraging.

Oftentimes, there is one overarching goal: getting a green card.

Green card basics

A green card is proof of an immigration status in the United States that shows that an individual is authorized to work and reside permanently in the United States. A green card is actually officially known as a “permanent resident card.” Getting a green card, however, is one of those immigration efforts that takes dedication and time.

For starters, you must be eligible to apply for a green card. There are many avenues for eligibility, such as through a family member or employment.

You must file a petition, and you must provide a photo, signature and fingerprints. You will also need to attend an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services official, who will ask about the details of your application and determine if any changes have occurred.

This interview is typically the last step in the application process for a green card. Depending on the situation, it may take several months to get to that point. Lastly, if all of these steps are successful, your petition will be approved and you will receive your green card.
