Planning for child custody over the summer

On Behalf of | Apr 28, 2026 | Divorce

Child custody arrangements may need to shift over the summer. It is very common for couples to make adjustments and change their parenting schedule.

One of the most important things during this process is communication. When coparents work together, it reduces the chances of conflict and helps them find a solution that works for their children. Below are a few things to consider.

Childcare needs

First and foremost, there are many cases where both parents work after the divorce. Their child custody schedule is based around their work schedule while the children are in school.

But during the summer, since children are on break, a new schedule may be necessary. If parents have flexibility with their employment, they may be able to watch the children themselves. But if not, they may need to have conversations about childcare options, such as using a local daycare, having the children stay with their grandparents or hiring babysitters. It is important for parents to be on the same page as they decide what options to use.

Trips or vacations

Additionally, the summer is sometimes an opportunity for parents to go on trips with their children. This can certainly be possible, even after divorce, but a new custody schedule may be necessary.

For example, a parent may want to take their children on a two-week trip to visit national parks across the United States. If they ordinarily exchange custody every week, the coparents need to communicate to make these adjustments.

Addressing child custody issues

Planning in advance can often help this process go smoothly. Any time that parents need to adjust or modify a child custody order, they need to know what legal steps to take.
